A Slower Journey into Western Sichuan

Travel from Chengdu into the snow mountains, Tibetan villages and quieter valleys of Western Sichuan on a route designed around the journey rather than the rush. Altitude rises gradually, driving days are kept manageable, and no demanding trekking or camping is required.

Deep into Living Jiarong Culture

Spend a night inside Zhonglu Tibetan Village instead of simply passing through. Explore centuries-old stone watchtowers with a local cultural educator, walk between traditional homes and family courtyards, and meet a heritage artisan keeping local traditions alive.

Tibetan Opera Beneath the Snow Mountains

Discover the masks, colors, movements and stories behind Tibetan opera, then learn a few traditional movements yourself — with Yala Snow Mountain and the open grasslands as your stage.

Coffee with Yala Snow Mountain

Slow down at Gunong Village with a coffee or tea facing Yala Snow Mountain. There is no need to rush away — stay into the late afternoon and, if conditions are right, watch the final light turn the snow-covered peak gold.

Meet the Highlands’ Rescued Wildlife

Near Muya Monastery, learn about rescued highland animals cared for by local monks and community members, and discover how Tibetan ideas of compassion and respect for life shape the relationship between people and wildlife. This is not a zoo or wildlife show, but a small window into life on the plateau.

Hidden Valleys & Two Golden Hours

Leave the better-known road behind for Wuxuhai Lake and the Mt. Gongga region. The journey is timed around Yala and Gongga, creating two opportunities to stay for golden hour and, when the weather cooperates, watch Western Sichuan’s snow peaks catch the last light of the day.

Day 1 — Arrive in Chengdu

Distance / Time: —
Altitude: Approx. 500 m
Accommodation: Upscale hotel

Arrive in Chengdu and settle in at your own pace. There is no fixed sightseeing schedule today — take time to recover from your journey, explore a local neighborhood, find a teahouse or simply enjoy your first taste of Sichuan food.

It is intentionally an easy first day before we leave the city and gradually make our way into the mountains.

Day 2 — Chengdu → Maobiliang → Shuangqiao Valley → Mt. Siguniang

Distance / Time: Approx. 210 km / 4.5 hrs

Altitude: Approx. 2,100 m
Accommodation: Boutique Tibetan village guesthouse

Travel into Danba and spend the day in Zhonglu, one of the heartlands of Jiarong Tibetan culture. Rather than simply stopping for photographs, go deeper into the village itself.

Explore centuries-old stone watchtowers with a local cultural educator, follow old paths between traditional homes and family courtyards, and meet a local heritage artisan. Stay inside the village tonight and experience Zhonglu after the day visitors have gone.
