Brown exploring remote travel routes and landscapes in Western China

Brown L.

Kham Tibetan Region Specialist

“With over 16 years of inbound travel experience, I’ve spent years guiding travelers across the Kham Tibetan regions of Western Sichuan — from remote monasteries and grasslands to high mountain roads and local Tibetan communities.

I enjoy helping travelers experience the plateau in a slower, more personal, and culturally connected way.”

In the Footsteps of Rock: The Shangri-La Discovery

In 1928, American explorer Joseph Rock established his base in Lijiang, Yunnan, becoming one of the first Western explorers to document the Yading Reserve and Lugu Lake region.

His photographs of snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows, and ancient monasteries helped shape the imagination behind James Hilton’s Lost Horizon, transforming “Shangri-La” from a fictional utopia into a timeless longing for travelers around the world.

Retracing a Legendary Highland Route

Today, this journey retraces Rock’s legendary route from Chengdu across the vast Hengduan Mountains — China’s great transverse range where rivers plunge through deep valleys and snow peaks rise dramatically into the sky.

Through winding highland passes, remote Tibetan villages, and landscapes that still feel untouched by time, the route moves westward into the very heart of the region Rock once explored.

Lugu Lake, Mosuo Culture & Ancient Caravan Trails

Drift through the morning mists of Lugu Lake aboard traditional Mosuo dugout canoes, experiencing one of Southwest China’s most distinctive lake cultures and highland communities.

From there, follow the old caravan routes that once connected mountain villages, monasteries, valleys, and sacred landscapes deep within the borderlands of Sichuan and Yunnan.

The Three Sacred Mountains of Yading

Enter the embrace of the Three Sacred Mountains — Jambeyang, Chanadorje, and Shenrezig — rising through drifting clouds like frozen light captured from another century.

From Luorong Pasture to Chonggu Monastery, these landscapes reveal the original face of Shangri-La that once captivated explorers, writers, and travelers around the world.

The Living Blueprint of Shangri-La

This is the living blueprint of Hilton’s “Blue Moon Valley.” This is the ancient echo of Nyainrong — “the sun and moon within one’s heart.”

This is no ordinary journey. It is a conversation across nearly a century — between exploration, memory, sacred mountains, and the timeless dream of Shangri-La.
